Our Priorities

We will rally Greens around a shared commitment to making life more affordable for regular Canadians. We’ll do this by calling for funding needed public services, taking decisive climate action, fairly taxing the ultra rich, and growing a coalition of progressives in Canada’s Parliament.

A government that works for all of us

Investing in meeting the needs of every Canadian rather than giving handouts to billionaires. We can:

  • Build deeply affordable public housing, and multiply housing co-ops,
  • Expand and protect truly universal, public healthcare,
  • Expand affordable and accessible childcare,
  • Invest in arts and culture equitably across the country, and
  • Push for more efficient and functional government services.

Mike’s results:

As a Member of Parliament, Mike rallied unprecedented support from 79 MPs across four parties and worked with advocates to build grassroots pressure to ensure the Canada Disability Benefit started paying out to Canadians with disabilities in 2025. Mike also secured more improvements to the Canada Disability Benefit Act than all other MPs combined, including mandating the benefit is indexed to inflation.

Climate solutions that work for all of us

The window is closing for us to preserve a safe future for our children and grandchildren, and successive Liberal and Conservative governments have failed to meet the moment we’re in. Canada can and should be a global leader, taking decisive action on the climate emergency while creating jobs and wealth at home. We must act decisively and:

  • Invest in the rapid scale-up of renewable energy to make Canada a clean energy superpower,
  • Build world-class public transit systems so convenient and affordable that families don’t have to be dependent on a car,
  • Build a modern, resilient, coast to coast to coast national electricity grid so all Canadians can benefit from the clean energy we produce, 
  • Support mass expansion of regenerative farming and support fishers to adapt to a changing climate,
  • Create a permanent, national firefighting force for year-round forest fire monitoring, prevention, and protection,
  • End all public subsidies to oil and gas companies, which are mostly foreign owned, and
  • Make polluters pay so Canadians aren’t on the hook for the messes corporations make.

Mike’s results:

While studying at Wilfrid Laurier University, Mike founded a non-profit organization to empower businesses and organizations to reduce their environmental impact.

Mike grew Sustainable Waterloo Region to be financially self-sufficient within four years, engaging employers representing 14% of Waterloo Region’s workforce to reduce their carbon pollution by tens of thousands of tonnes, saving participating companies and organizations money at the same time.

An economy that works for all of us

We are a wealthy nation, but our wealth is increasingly in the hands of a tiny fraction of billionaire families. While the rich get richer, most Canadians are struggling to pay their bills. We can bring back fairness for the 99 percent by fighting for a fairer system that will:

  • Reduce taxes on the lowest income workers, small businesses, and the middle class,
  • Incentivize a living wage across public and private sectors,
  • Create and protect unionized jobs while standing up for all workers,
  • Tax billionaires and the ultra-rich fairly on wealth over $10 million and introduce an inheritance and gift tax on fortunes over $10 million,
  • Update tax brackets with the addition of higher marginal income taxes on income over $1,000,000, and 
  • Ensure every Canadian has an equal opportunity to thrive.

Mike’s results:

During his time in Ottawa, Mike proved how following the lead of countries like the UK and extending a windfall tax from big banks to include large oil and gas companies could generate $4.2 billion for affordability solutions through his Motion 92, including:

  • Expanding the Greener Homes Grant program
  • Funding free heat pump installations
  • Enhancing public transit access and affordability

A democracy that works for all of us

Voters in Canada face the prospect of the next general election being one where the two largest parties are both pushing right-wing policy. We will build a united, progressive front in Parliament to put power back in the hands of everyday Canadians and workers, rather than the two conservative parties and their corporate backers. We will:  

  • Reduce the voting age to 16 to ensure that the people most affected by long-term policies have a voice at the table,
  • Lift up the voices, campaigns, and expertise of national progressive civil society organizations working to improve the lives of Canadians,
  • Commit to good faith engagement with other progressive parties in the interest of securing electoral cooperation until we have proportional representation,
  • Put people before politics, reduce partisanship, and work across party lines to ensure we have effective government, and
  • Prioritize proportional representation as a non-negotiable demand when Greens next have the balance of power in Parliament.

Mike’s results:

Mike championed electoral reform in his time as MP, including through his advocacy for a national citizens’ assembly. Working with Fair Vote Canada volunteers and leadership, he helped get the first-ever vote on electoral reform in the House of Commons and built unprecedented cross-party support from Liberal, NDP, Conservative, and Green MPs – with more MPs breaking party rank to support the motion than any other vote in that session.

A Canada we can be proud of

Right now, the world sees a growing shift towards militarism, inequality, and instability. We believe Canada should return to our roots as a world leader in promoting peace, equity and stability. To do so we should:  

  • Honour our commitments to reconciliation with the Indigenous Peoples of this land,
  • Promote dialogue and peaceful solutions to international issues with a focus on human rights being upheld and international law followed,
  • Protect the rights and freedoms of all individuals, and
  • Support international organizations that protect multilateralism, health, justice, and peace.

Mike’s results:

Mike worked with MPs from all parties to advocate in Parliament for human rights to be respected, international law to be upheld, and for the Canadian government to stand on the side of peace and justice. His successes included:

  • Working with the Minister of Immigration to successfully expand Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s definition of an “immediate family member” to include siblings and grandparents to help Sudanese-Canadians get loved ones to safety,
  • Being the first MP to call for a ceasefire in the midst of the genocide in Gaza, and initiating the first joint statement from dozens of MPs calling for a ceasefire in November 2025 – contributing to the federal government joining the call months later.
